Chapter 22 - Helen Takes the Stand

Helen wore a simple dark suit.

No silver dress.

No jewelry chosen by Charles.

His attorney asked why she waited seventeen years.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of your husband?”

“Yes.”

“Yet you remained married.”

“Yes.”

“Benefited from his income?”

“Yes.”

“Attended public events with him?”

“Yes.”

The attorney smiled as if each answer weakened her.

Helen continued:

“Fear does not always look like running.”

The courtroom became quiet.

She described the torn clothing.

The burned coat.

The forged statement.

The threats.

Then the attorney asked why she did not protect Ella at the party.

Helen looked at her daughter.

“Because I failed again.”

No excuse.

No performance.

Only responsibility.

Ella lowered her eyes.

That honesty did not repair everything.

But it mattered.

Charles watched Helen with contempt.

The look was familiar.

For decades, it ended conversations.

On the witness stand, Helen saw it and kept speaking.
