Helen sold the mansion.
The backyard where the party occurred became impossible for her to live beside.
She moved into a small house near Ella.
Their relationship rebuilt slowly.
Helen joined a support group for families affected by coercive control.
At first, she spoke only about Charles.
Later, she spoke about herself.
How she minimized.
How she redirected anger.
How she taught Ella to remain quiet because quiet reduced immediate danger.
She apologized without demanding acceptance.
Ella did not call every day.

But one winter evening, she invited Helen to dinner.
Helen dropped a serving spoon.
The sound made her freeze.
