Chapter 3 - What Ella Found in Mark’s Room
Three hours before the party, Ella had gone upstairs looking for aspirin.
Her father had slapped her once before, months earlier, but never in front of witnesses.
She already knew tension would be high.
Mark’s promotion ceremony had become a family coronation.
Charles had spent weeks telling everyone that the Bennett name was “back where it belonged.”
Ella did not plan to confront anyone.
Not then.
She entered the upstairs guest bathroom and found the medicine cabinet empty.
As she turned to leave, she heard a phone vibrating inside Mark’s old bedroom.
The door was open.
A navy NYPD jacket hung over the desk chair.
Mark’s personal phone rested beside an unsealed evidence envelope.
Ella stopped.
She recognized the handwriting on the front.
BENNETT, A.—HOMICIDE 14-983.
Amanda Bennett.
Their cousin.
Seventeen years earlier, Amanda disappeared after leaving a police fundraiser with a married detective.
Her body was found beside the Hudson River three days later.
The case was never solved.
Charles had always said the department failed the family.
But the envelope in Mark’s room had been marked CLOSED—ACCIDENTAL DROWNING.
Ella reached for it.
Inside were crime-scene photographs, witness statements, and a copy of a report she had never seen.
One witness said Amanda entered a car driven by Charles.
Another reported hearing her argue with him about “the missing narcotics money.”
The statements were stamped SUPPRESSED—COMMAND REVIEW.
Ella’s hands began shaking.
Then Mark’s phone lit up.
A message from Charles appeared.
BURN THE GIRL’S FILE BEFORE ROSS ARRIVES.
Ella photographed everything.
Behind the envelope lay a small digital recorder.
She pressed play.
Charles’s voice:
“Make sure she never talks. If Ross asks, the evidence was destroyed in the flood.”
A second voice answered.
Mark.
“What about Ella?”
Charles replied:
“She knows nothing.”
Ella called Captain Ross immediately.
Not the police emergency line.
Not Internal Affairs.
Ross.
Because his name appeared in the file beside one handwritten note:
ROSS OBJECTED. OVERRULED.
