The cabinet held police medals, funeral cards, commendations, and Amanda’s framed photograph.
Helen opened it under warrant supervision.
Behind Charles’s retirement plaque was a hidden compartment.
Inside lay a handwritten ledger listing payments by initials.
Judges.
Commanders.
Evidence clerks.
Union officials.
One set of initials appeared beside repeated cash transfers.

Mark Bennett.
Mark had received money too.
He claimed he believed it came from the security company.
The ledger labeled the payments:
SUCCESSION.
Charles had been funding his son’s rise as part of a long-term plan.
Mark would eventually control investigations involving Bennett Security clients.
Charles would remain powerful without wearing a badge.
Amanda’s murder protected the first generation of the scheme.
Mark’s promotion would have secured the next.
Ella found her own initials in the ledger.
E.B.—CONTAINMENT.
Beside them were payments to a private investigator.
Charles had monitored her.
Her workplace.
Her relationships.
Her bank account.
He knew she met Captain Ross twice during the previous month.
That explained the sudden family invitation.
The party had not only celebrated Mark.
It placed Ella inside a controlled environment where Charles could confront her publicly and judge how much she knew.
