Chapter 28 - Captain Ross Retires

Daniel Ross retired two years after the trial.

At his ceremony, there were no extravagant lights.

No family dynasty speeches.

No altered scores.

Ella attended with Helen.

Ross received a service citation for integrity in long-term corruption investigations.

When asked to speak, he said:

“Integrity is not refusing every compromise. It is recognizing when compromise becomes surrender.”

Afterward, he handed Ella a sealed copy of Amanda’s restored case summary.

“Families are entitled to the truth.”

Ella opened it at home.

The final page listed the case status:

CLOSED BY CONVICTION.

For seventeen years, the file had said accidental.

Then unresolved.

Now it named what happened.
