Chapter 24 - The Verdict
The jury deliberated for eleven hours.
Charles was convicted of second-degree murder, conspiracy, evidence tampering, obstruction, fraud, and assault.
He showed no emotion when the clerk read the verdict.
Grady received a lengthy sentence under his plea agreement.
Several former officers were indicted for related corruption.
Bennett Security Consulting was dissolved.
Its assets were seized for victim compensation and charity restitution.
At sentencing, Ella spoke.
“My father believed silence was loyalty.”
She looked at Charles.
“He taught us that protecting the family meant protecting him.”
Charles stared forward.
“Amanda challenged that rule and died. Helen challenged it and was frightened. Mark obeyed it and lost his future. I repeated one question at a party, and he put his hands on me in front of officers.”
Ella’s voice remained steady.
“The violence was not a loss of control. It was how he maintained control.”
Charles received thirty years to life.
As officers approached, he finally looked at Ella.
“You destroyed this family.”
