Chapter 9 - BEATRICE’S REAL VOICE
Grace held Caleb’s phone with both hands.
Beatrice’s voice played through the suite.
“If anything happens to me tonight, Katherine is the only person who tried to save me.”
Katherine began crying harder.
Not from fear this time.
From hearing her friend’s voice after seven years.
The recording continued.
“Owen knows I copied the foundation accounts. He threatened Caleb today.”
Grace looked sharply at her son.
Caleb stopped moving.
Beatrice’s voice trembled.
“He sent me a picture of my brother outside his school. Katherine says we should call federal investigators, but I’m afraid Owen’s family owns everyone we would call.”
Robert turned toward Caleb.
“Did your edited recording include that?”
Caleb could not answer.
The audio continued.
“If Katherine tells Caleb too soon, he’ll confront Owen. He still thinks courage means walking straight at danger.”
Grace covered her mouth.
Beatrice had been protecting him.
The sentence Katherine once said—“You can’t tell Caleb”—had nothing to do with hiding a crime.
It was about keeping him alive.
On the recording, Katherine’s younger voice answered:
“Then we get you somewhere safe first. After that, he deserves the truth.”
Beatrice began to cry.
“If I don’t make it, promise me you won’t let Owen take the trust.”
“I promise.”
“And tell Mom I’m sorry I kept shutting her out.”
Grace’s knees weakened.
Robert supported her.
Caleb stepped toward the phone.
“Turn it off.”
Grace moved away from him.
“You married this woman because of an edited sentence?”
“I thought—”
“You locked her in here.”
“She wouldn’t tell me the truth.”
“She could not tell you.”
Frank opened the suite door as police officers approached.
Detective Elena Ruiz entered first.
She saw Katherine on the floor, the blocked exit, the hidden camera, and the unsigned confession papers.
“Step away from the bride,” she ordered.
Caleb raised his hands.
Grace gave Ruiz the phone.
“There is someone messaging him about my daughter.”
Ruiz examined the newest photograph.
It had been taken from the building across the street.
The sender had watched the entire confrontation.
Then another message appeared.
May you like
Too late, Caleb. She has already ruined you.
👉 Beatrice’s recording cleared Katherine, but the new message revealed that the wedding-night trap was designed to silence a federal witness.
