Chapter 4 - THE RECORDING CALEB RECEIVED

The anonymous package arrived at Caleb’s office on the anniversary of Beatrice’s death.

He had spent seven years believing the official explanation.

Police said Beatrice and Katherine argued over missing money.

Witnesses heard raised voices.

Katherine’s fingerprints were found on Beatrice’s coat.

Katherine later signed a confidential settlement and disappeared from public view.

Grace refused to discuss the investigation.

Robert encouraged Caleb to stop reopening the wound.

But Caleb never stopped.

The envelope appeared to give him what grief had denied him.

A villain.

The clipped audio continued:

Katherine: “You promised you wouldn’t tell him.”

Beatrice: “Caleb still thinks people are good.”

Katherine: “Then protect him from this.”

The original context was missing.

Caleb did not know Katherine and Beatrice had been discussing Owen’s threats against Caleb.

Owen had learned where Caleb attended high school.

He had photographs of the Mercer home.

Beatrice feared her younger brother would confront Owen and be hurt.

The $150,000 settlement looked even worse.

Caleb assumed the Harrow family paid Katherine to remain silent.

He did not know the money came from a federal witness-restitution program after Katherine lost her job, apartment, and savings while living under protection.

The anonymous sender gave Caleb access to Katherine’s schedule.

Her employment history.

Her father’s address.

Even the restaurants she visited.

The messages came from a burner number.

They never identified the sender.

They only signed each instruction with one letter.

B.

Caleb convinced himself Beatrice had arranged for someone to expose Katherine if anything happened.

He began reporting everything back to the number.

Katherine trusted you.

Katherine regrets the past.

Katherine still has nightmares.

The replies were always brief.

Regret is not confession.

Get closer.

By the time Caleb proposed, he was no longer only investigating.

He had fallen in love with Katherine.

But instead of abandoning the revenge, he tried to separate his feelings from his plan.

He told himself that love gave Katherine one final chance to admit the truth.

If she confessed, he would forgive her.

If she did not, she deserved what came next.

👉 Caleb called his plan justice, but every step required him to deceive the woman he claimed to love.
