Chapter 5 - THE QUESTIONS THAT FELT LIKE CONCERN
Caleb never asked Katherine directly about Beatrice.
He circled the subject.
He asked whether she believed people could be forgiven for surviving when someone else died.
He asked why she left Hudson State before graduation.
He asked whether confidential settlements always meant guilt.
Katherine answered carefully.
“A sealed case is not always a secret someone chooses.”
Caleb watched her.
“Who chooses it, then?”
“Sometimes prosecutors. Sometimes courts.”
“Did that happen to you?”
She looked away.
“I can’t discuss it.”
Her answer strengthened his suspicion.
Katherine wanted to tell him.
She came close several times.
But the federal protective order remained active because the investigation into Owen Harrow’s financial network was unfinished.
Her identity as the surviving witness had been sealed.
The prosecutor warned that disclosure could endanger her, Frank, and other witnesses.
Katherine also feared Caleb’s reaction to learning she had watched someone named Beatrice die.
She still did not know it was his sister.
Caleb used her silence to justify deeper invasions.
He copied files from her laptop.
He followed her to therapy appointments.
He searched her father’s home while pretending to help repair a leaking pipe.
Then he found papers connected to the Beatrice Lane Memorial Trust.
The trust had been created using assets recovered from Owen’s foundation.
Katherine served as temporary trustee under sealed instructions written by Beatrice.
The money funded housing and legal support for abuse survivors.
Caleb saw only that Katherine controlled something bearing his sister’s name.
He believed she had taken Beatrice’s legacy too.
When he confronted the burner-number sender, the reply came immediately.
Marriage gives you access she will never offer voluntarily.
Caleb stared at the message.
He had already purchased Katherine’s engagement ring.
He told himself the wedding was real.
The investigation was separate.
But after the proposal, the anonymous sender began demanding deadlines.
Make her confess before the trust renewal.
Get her signature.
Do not let Grace interfere.
That final instruction disturbed Caleb.
