Chapter 6 - THE WEDDING WITH A SECOND PURPOSE
Katherine wanted a small wedding.
Caleb insisted on a formal ceremony at the Halston Grand Hotel.
“It should feel unforgettable,” he said.
He selected the honeymoon suite himself.
He requested an interior lock that could not be opened from the hallway without management authorization.
He positioned a small camera inside a flower arrangement facing the sitting area.
He told himself he needed proof of Katherine’s confession.
The burner number instructed him to prepare three documents.
An annulment petition.
A statement admitting responsibility for Beatrice’s death.
A transfer surrendering Katherine’s authority over the memorial trust.
The sender promised that once Katherine signed, the original evidence would be delivered to the Mercer family.
Caleb’s doubts grew.
He began waking beside Katherine and watching her sleep.
She trusted him enough to be defenseless.
She included Grace in dress fittings.
She asked Robert to give a reading during the ceremony.
Frank treated Caleb like the son he never had.
Every loving moment made the revenge more difficult.
It did not make him stop.
Two weeks before the wedding, an encrypted file appeared in Caleb’s inbox.
BEATRICE—COMPLETE AUDIO.
The message beneath it read:
Listen only after Katherine confesses.
Caleb downloaded the file.
He did not play it.
He feared it might weaken his resolve.
Instead, he stored it on his phone.
That decision would later destroy his claim that he only wanted the truth.
The night before the wedding, Katherine found Caleb standing alone in the hotel corridor.
“You look terrified,” she said.
He forced a smile.
“Wedding nerves.”
She touched his face.
“You know you can tell me anything.”
The kindness nearly broke him.
For one moment, Caleb considered confessing everything.
Then his phone vibrated.
Tomorrow night. Make her pay for Beatrice.
He turned the screen away.
Katherine noticed.
“Who keeps messaging you?”
“Work.”
She accepted the lie because she loved him.
The following afternoon, they exchanged vows beneath white flowers.
Caleb promised honesty.
Katherine promised trust.
