Chapter 15 - BEATRICE’S FINAL REQUEST
The complete audio lasted nineteen minutes.
Grace listened to every second in Katherine’s attorney’s office.
Beatrice spoke as though she knew she might not return.
“Mom, I’m sorry I kept telling you everything was fine.”
Grace began crying.
“I thought if you knew about Owen, you would blame yourself for not seeing it. None of this is your fault.”
Robert reached for Grace’s hand.
Beatrice continued.
“Robert, thank you for never making me feel like I belonged less because Caleb was your biological son.”
Then she spoke about Caleb.
“My little brother believes protecting people means fighting whoever hurts them. He doesn’t understand that angry men can use anger against you.”
Grace closed her eyes.
“If Owen tells Caleb that Katherine betrayed me, please make him listen before he acts.”
Katherine looked away.
Beatrice had predicted the exact danger.
Then came the final request.
“Katherine, if I don’t make it, protect the recovered money. Use it for women who are told fear is proof they are weak.”
Her voice broke.
“And do not let my family turn you into the place where they put their grief.”
Grace stopped the recording.
For years, she had avoided Katherine’s name because hearing it reopened the loss.
That silence allowed Caleb to create his own story.
Grace faced Katherine.
“My daughter asked us to protect you, and we never even found you.”
“You were grieving.”
“So were you.”
Grace reached across the table.
This time, Katherine allowed her to take her hand.
“I cannot replace what Caleb took from you,” Grace said. “But Robert and I will not disappear because the marriage ended.”
Katherine cried quietly.
She had expected the Mercers to see her as the woman connected to Beatrice’s death.
Instead, they saw the woman Beatrice trusted at the end.
The memorial trust board voted unanimously to keep Katherine as trustee.
Grace accepted a position beside her.
Not to control the money.
To complete her daughter’s work.
Caleb learned of the decision from his attorney.
He did not challenge it.
For the first time, he understood that Beatrice’s legacy had never been something he was entitled to inherit.
