Chapter 11 - WHAT HAPPENED IN THE GARAGE

Federal prosecutors released Katherine from part of the protective order the following morning.

For the first time, she told Grace and Robert the entire story.

Beatrice had arranged to meet Katherine in the alumni garage with a flash drive.

Owen arrived first.

He demanded the evidence.

Beatrice refused.

Owen told her no one would believe a frightened college student over the son of a respected judge.

Katherine called 911.

Owen struck the phone away.

The emergency operator heard part of the confrontation before the connection ended.

Beatrice moved toward the stairwell.

Owen grabbed the back of her coat.

Katherine seized Beatrice’s arm and pulled in the opposite direction.

That was why Katherine’s fingerprints covered the fabric.

The old railing gave way.

Beatrice slipped over the edge.

Katherine caught her wrist.

For several seconds, Beatrice hung above the concrete level below.

Owen stood beside Katherine.

He could have helped.

Instead, he stepped on Katherine’s injured hand.

Her grip failed.

Beatrice fell.

Katherine ran down four levels and remained beside her until paramedics arrived.

Beatrice was conscious for less than one minute.

She pressed a small key into Katherine’s hand.

“The locker,” she whispered.

Then she said:

“Don’t let him blame you.”

By morning, Owen’s family had already begun doing exactly that.

The broken railing was replaced before investigators examined it.

The emergency call disappeared from local police records.

A witness who saw Owen leave the garage changed his statement.

Detective Martin Voss wrote that Katherine and Beatrice had argued over money.

Voss later became head of campus security.

The flash drive was hidden inside a train-station locker.

Katherine retrieved it and delivered it directly to federal authorities.

The records launched a fraud investigation, but Owen avoided arrest because the evidence did not prove he caused Beatrice’s fall.

Katherine remained the only living eyewitness.

Now Beatrice’s full recording and the wedding messages could reopen the death investigation.

Grace reached for Katherine’s hand.

“You carried this alone because my daughter asked you to protect us.”

Katherine shook her head.

May you like

“I carried it because the people who should have protected her chose power instead.”

👉 Katherine finally revealed Owen’s role, but Caleb’s phone contained evidence that he had known more before the wedding than he admitted.
