Chapter 14 - THE KEY BEATRICE LEFT BEHIND
The small key Beatrice gave Katherine opened more than the train-station locker.
Inside the locker, Katherine had found the financial flash drive and an envelope.
Federal investigators took both into evidence.
The envelope remained sealed because it contained instructions tied to the memorial trust.
After the case reopened, prosecutors allowed Grace, Katherine, and the trustee to examine it.
Inside was Beatrice’s bracelet.
One clasp was broken.
A dark smear remained beneath the metal.
Modern testing identified Owen’s blood.
Katherine remembered Beatrice scratching his face during the struggle.
The original police report never mentioned an injury.
Photographs from a charity event the following morning showed Owen wearing makeup near his jaw.

Owen says if I expose him, he will make it look like Katherine and I fought. He knows I once borrowed money from her. He says that will become the motive.
Beatrice had predicted the official story before her death.

It contained video recorded secretly inside Owen’s apartment.
He discussed the shell companies with Detective Voss.
Voss promised to “manage the scene” if Beatrice became a problem.
Owen asked:
“What about Katherine?”
Voss answered:
“She has no powerful family. People will believe whatever grief makes easiest.”
The recording connected the fraud, the death, and the cover-up.

He wanted it dissolved because it contained money traced to his stolen accounts.
Katherine had not been chosen as trustee by accident.
