Chapter 17 - THE ROOM WITH THE WHITE DOOR
Months after the trials, Katherine returned to the Halston Grand Hotel.
The honeymoon suite remained closed while evidence was collected.
The hotel offered to renovate it completely.
Katherine asked to enter first.
Frank accompanied her.
So did Grace.
The roses were gone.
The broken glass had been replaced.
The hidden camera had left a small mark on the wall where the flower arrangement once stood.
Katherine stopped inside the doorway.
Her breathing changed.
Frank offered his arm.
“We can leave.”
“No.”
She walked toward the wall where she had sat in her wedding dress.
The room looked smaller than she remembered.
Fear had made every distance feel impossible that night.
Grace stood near the bed.
“I keep thinking I should have known.”
“Knew what?”
“That Caleb was carrying all that anger.”
Katherine shook her head.
“He worked very hard to hide it.”
The hotel donated the suite’s furniture to charity.
The room was converted into a private preparation space for brides, survivors, and families who needed a safe room during large events.
The interior lock was replaced with one that always opened from inside.
A discreet alarm connected directly to hotel security.
No cameras were permitted.
The white door carried a small brass plaque:
PRIVACY IS NOT CONFINEMENT.
Katherine donated her wedding dress to a textile artist.
The artist removed the damaged lower panels and transformed the fabric into dozens of white ribbons.
Each ribbon was given to a survivor receiving legal help from the Beatrice Lane Memorial Trust.
Katherine kept one.
She tied it around the key Beatrice had pressed into her hand seven years earlier.
The key no longer represented the night Beatrice died.
It represented the truth she had managed to preserve.
As Katherine prepared to leave the suite, Grace asked:
“Do you regret meeting Caleb?”
Katherine considered the question.
“I regret what he chose to do.”
She looked at Grace.
