Chapter 1 - THE BRIDE ON THE FLOOR

“She had to pay.”
Caleb Mercer sat beside the hotel bed, his white dress shirt wrinkled and his hands covering his face.
Across the marble floor, Katherine struggled to breathe.
Her wedding dress spread around her like torn white wings. Red roses had been ripped from the bridal arrangement and scattered near the wall. Her bouquet lay overturned beside the door.
She pressed one hand against her chest.
“I can’t be his wife.”
Grace and Robert stood frozen in the doorway.
Only an hour earlier, they had watched Caleb promise to protect Katherine for the rest of his life.
Now their new daughter-in-law was shaking against the wall while their son spoke about punishment.
Grace entered slowly and lowered herself in front of Katherine.
She did not touch her.
“You’re safe,” she whispered. “Tell me what happened.”
Katherine looked past her toward Caleb.
“He locked the door.”
Robert moved between his son and the bride.
“Caleb, what did you do?”
A phone lay near the foot of the bed.
Its screen remained illuminated.
Grace picked it up.
A message filled the screen.
MAKE HER CONFESS TONIGHT—FOR BEATRICE.
Beneath it was an old photograph of a young woman with dark hair and a bright, familiar smile.
Grace stopped breathing.
Beatrice.
Her daughter.
Caleb’s older half-sister.
Dead for seven years.
“Why is Beatrice’s picture on your phone?” Grace asked.
Caleb slowly raised his head.
“Mom, give it back.”
A recording file appeared beneath the message.
BEATRICE—LAST NIGHT.
Grace’s fear hardened into something colder.
“Caleb, what did you do?”
In the hallway, Katherine’s father, Frank Ellis, saw the message over Grace’s shoulder. He immediately called emergency services.
“Get the police here now.”
Caleb stood.
“Mom, don’t play that.”
Grace positioned herself between her son and Katherine.
Then she pressed the screen.
Beatrice’s voice filled the honeymoon suite.
“If anything happens to me tonight, Katherine is the only person who tried to save me.”
Caleb’s face turned white.
Katherine looked up through her tears.
