Chapter 7 - THE FIRST CRACK IN THE CELEBRATION

During the wedding reception, Grace noticed Caleb checking his phone repeatedly.

He appeared distracted during the first dance.

He disappeared twice between speeches.

When she followed him into the corridor, she heard him whisper:

“Not yet. She’s surrounded by people.”

Grace stepped around the corner.

Caleb ended the call.

“Who was that?”

“The hotel manager.”

“You sounded angry.”

“There’s a problem with the suite.”

Grace studied her son.

Since Beatrice’s death, Caleb had become protective of his private life.

He changed careers twice.

He stopped discussing his grief.

Grace knew he still searched for answers, but she believed therapy had helped him accept the case.

She had no idea he had found Katherine.

No idea he had married the last person who saw Beatrice alive.

Across the ballroom, Frank saw Katherine staring at Caleb.

“You can still leave,” he said quietly.

Katherine looked shocked.

“Dad, I just married him.”

“A ceremony does not remove your instincts.”

“He’s nervous.”

“Are you?”

Katherine glanced at the sealed elevator leading toward the honeymoon floor.

She had felt something changing for weeks.

Caleb asked too many questions about old court cases.

He wanted access to her trust files.

He became angry when she said she could not add him as co-trustee.

Yet she believed marriage would create the honesty they had both avoided.

After the reception, Frank escorted them to the suite.

He planned to leave once Katherine was safely inside.

Caleb insisted they wanted privacy.

Grace and Robert remained nearby to collect wedding gifts from another room.

As soon as the suite door closed, Caleb locked it.

Katherine smiled uncertainly.

“What are you doing?”

Caleb removed his jacket.

Then he placed Beatrice’s photograph on the bed.

Katherine’s bouquet slipped from her hands.

She recognized the face immediately.

“Where did you get that?”

Caleb’s expression hardened.

“Her name was Beatrice Lane.”

Katherine backed away.

“She was my sister.”

The room seemed to tilt beneath her.

“You knew?”

“I knew who you were before our first date.”

Katherine stared at the man she had married less than two hours earlier.

Every memory changed at once.

Caleb placed the confession papers beside the photograph.
