Chapter 10 - THE BRIDE UNDER PROTECTION

Paramedics treated Katherine in the suite.

Her heart was healthy.

The chest pain came from the panic attack.

Frank remained beside her while Detective Ruiz questioned Caleb in the hallway.

Katherine asked to speak with Grace and Robert.

“There are things I still cannot disclose without federal permission,” she said.

Grace sat near her.

“Tell us only what you safely can.”

Katherine looked toward the closed door.

“Beatrice discovered financial fraud inside the Harrow Foundation. Owen was stealing donor money through shell companies.”

“We knew the foundation was investigated,” Robert said. “We were told Beatrice had no involvement.”

“She was the source.”

Grace began crying.

“For seven years, people treated her like an unstable girl who fell during an argument.”

“Owen’s family created that story.”

Katherine explained that after Beatrice’s death, federal investigators found part of the copied records.

Katherine became a protected witness.

Before she could testify, her apartment was broken into.

Frank’s construction company was falsely accused of safety violations.

A detective leaked Katherine’s sealed interview to Owen’s attorney.

Federal prosecutors moved Katherine to another state and restricted all discussion of the case.

The $150,000 payment covered medical care, relocation, lost employment, and damage caused by witness retaliation.

“It was never payment for silence,” Katherine said. “It was restitution for what their silence cost me.”

Grace looked toward the confession documents.

“Did Caleb know you controlled Beatrice’s trust?”

“He found the records without permission.”

The Beatrice Lane Memorial Trust held money recovered from the fraud.

Its terms required Katherine to protect it until the criminal case ended.

Owen could not access the funds while Katherine remained a credible witness.

But if she publicly confessed to causing Beatrice’s death, Owen’s lawyers could attack her testimony and challenge the trust.

Caleb’s wedding-night plan would have given Owen everything he needed.

Detective Ruiz entered.

“We traced the messages to a relay server, but whoever sent them knew sealed case details.”

Katherine’s face went pale.

Only prosecutors, investigators, and the Harrow defense team had access.

Someone inside the old case was still helping Owen.

👉 Caleb’s revenge had nearly discredited Katherine—but the leak could only have come from someone sworn to protect Beatrice’s investigation.
