Chapter 3 - THE GIRL KATHERINE COULD NOT SAVE

Beatrice Lane entered Katherine’s life during their sophomore year of college.
She was fearless in public and restless in private.
She sang badly while cooking.
She borrowed Katherine’s sweaters without asking.
She could make an entire table laugh, then disappear into the bathroom and cry where no one could hear her.
Beatrice rarely discussed her family.
She said her mother, Grace, loved her but worried too much.
She described Robert as kind.
She spoke proudly of Caleb, the little brother who believed she could do anything.
But Beatrice kept her college life separate from home.
She was dating Owen Harrow, a graduate student who managed finances for a prestigious charitable foundation.
At first, Owen seemed impressive.
He bought Beatrice expensive gifts.
He helped her find an internship.
He introduced her to powerful people.
Then Katherine noticed the changes.
Beatrice stopped wearing sleeveless tops.
She checked her phone constantly.
She apologized whenever Owen became angry, even when she had done nothing.
One night, Katherine found her sitting on the bathroom floor with a split lip.
Beatrice claimed she had fallen.
Katherine did not believe her.
“I can help you leave,” Katherine said.
“You don’t understand who his father is.”
“I don’t care.”
“You should.”
Owen’s father was a state judge.
His uncle controlled several charities and political committees.
His family’s influence reached into banks, police departments, and local courts.
Beatrice had also discovered that Owen was stealing money from the foundation.
She copied account records.
The theft exceeded $4 million.
When Owen realized she knew, he began threatening her family.
Beatrice called Katherine on the final night.
“I’m ready,” she whispered. “I’m leaving him.”
Katherine drove to the alumni parking garage.
She expected to collect Beatrice and the evidence.
Instead, she found Owen waiting beside Beatrice’s car.
Beatrice stood near the open edge of the fourth level.
Owen demanded the flash drive.
Katherine called 911.
Before she could give the location, Owen knocked the phone from her hand.
What happened next lasted less than one minute.

It haunted Katherine for seven years.
👉 The official report said Beatrice fell during an argument with Katherine—but the only surviving witness knew Owen had been standing between them.
