Chapter 19 - THE LETTER WITH NO EXCUSE
Caleb wrote from prison eighteen months after sentencing.
Katherine nearly returned the letter unopened.
Grace told her she owed him nothing.
Frank offered to destroy it.
Katherine chose to read it with her therapist.
Caleb did not ask her to forgive him.
He did not blame Owen.
He wrote:
Owen gave me a lie because I wanted one. A lie allowed me to feel powerful instead of helpless.
He admitted he opened the full recording before the wedding.
He heard Beatrice defend Katherine.
Instead of listening further, he stopped because innocence would require him to face what he had done.
I told myself I needed a confession. What I wanted was control over a truth that did not belong to me.
He apologized for studying Katherine before meeting her.
For pretending every coincidence was love.
For blocking the door.
For using Beatrice’s name as a weapon.
At the end, he wrote:
I loved you, but I treated love as permission to put you on trial. That is not a love you should ever return to.
Katherine cried after reading it.
Not because she wanted him back.
Because the apology acknowledged the reality he once forced her to defend.
She wrote one response.
I believe you are finally telling the truth.
I hope you continue becoming someone Beatrice would recognize.
I forgive myself for trusting you.
I do not want further contact.
Caleb respected the boundary.
Grace continued visiting him as his mother.
She never carried messages between them.
Robert participated in family counseling with him.
They loved their son without pretending he had been treated unfairly.
Katherine did not resent them for remaining his parents.
Healthy love, she learned, did not require everyone to abandon the same person.
It required everyone to stop abandoning the truth.
Two years later, Katherine stood inside Beatrice House preparing for an event unlike any ceremony she had attended before.
There was no groom.
No locked room.
