Chapter 7 - MAYA’S HIDDEN WARNING
Maya’s doctor could not release medical records without legal authorization.
Lena obtained it through the homicide team after presenting photographs of the bruising.
During Maya’s final prenatal appointment, she had asked Daniel to wait outside.
She told the doctor her husband had become controlling.
He monitored her phone.
He restricted access to company accounts.
He grabbed her wrist during arguments.
Maya said she was planning to leave after securing evidence of financial fraud.
The doctor documented everything.
She also gave Maya a discreet safety card and offered to contact an advocate.
Maya declined.
“My sister is a detective,” she said. “Once I get the documents, I’m going to her.”
She never got the chance.
The doctor remembered another detail.
Maya had received several urgent messages during the appointment.
Each came from the family attorney.
The messages asked her to visit his office alone.
When investigators questioned him, he claimed he had only wanted to discuss estate planning.
He denied knowing about the forged signature.
Then phone records showed nine calls between him and Daniel on the day Maya died.
Four involved Celeste.
The attorney insisted they were routine business conversations.
Lena did not believe him.
The homicide detectives requested the attorney’s electronic files.
He resisted under attorney-client privilege.
A judge ordered him to preserve the records while the dispute was reviewed.
That night, someone remotely deleted a folder from his office server.
The technology team recovered the folder name.
MAYA—CAPACITY EVALUATION.
Inside the backup system was a draft petition claiming Maya was mentally unfit to manage the company.
The document had been created before her death.
It described her investigation of missing money as paranoid behavior.
Daniel planned to use her pregnancy and emotional distress to remove her from control.
If she lived, he would declare her incompetent.
