Chapter 3 - THE LEDGER IN THE WALL

Maya inherited controlling ownership of Bennett Industrial Properties after their father died.
The company owned warehouses, office buildings, and several distribution centers across three states.
Maya had never wanted to run daily operations.
She was a physical therapist who preferred helping injured children regain movement.
Daniel offered to supervise the business side.
He had an MBA.
He understood contracts.
He promised Maya she would remain in control while he handled the details.
For four years, the arrangement appeared successful.
The company reported steady profits.
Taxes were paid.
Employees kept their jobs.
Then Maya decided to renovate their father’s old office before the baby arrived.
Behind a loose wooden panel, she found a small black ledger.
Their father had written every major property transaction by hand.
At first, Maya thought it was sentimental.
Then she compared it with the company’s digital records.
The rental income did not match.
Three warehouses were listed as partially vacant.
Her father’s ledger showed long-term tenants still occupying every unit.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars were missing.
Maya contacted the company accountant.
He resigned the following morning.
She asked Daniel why.
“He was old,” Daniel replied.
“He was fifty-two.”
“He made mistakes.”
“Did he find missing rent?”
Daniel’s face became still.
“What missing rent?”
Maya had not told him what she found.
That was the first moment she understood Daniel might already know.
She copied several ledger pages and placed the originals in a bank safe-deposit box.
Then she contacted Lena.
But before they could meet, Daniel arrived unexpectedly at Maya’s clinic.
He carried flowers.
Her coworkers smiled when they saw him.
In the parking garage, his expression changed.
“Why are you digging through old company records?”
“It’s my company.”
“I manage it.”
“You work for it.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Pregnancy is making you suspicious.”
Maya moved toward her car.
He caught her wrist.
Not hard enough to bruise immediately.
Hard enough that she understood the warning.
That night, Maya photographed the red marks beneath her sleeve.

She saved the image in a hidden folder titled Nursery Receipts.
👉 Daniel believed fear would stop Maya’s questions, but she had already copied the ledger page containing Celeste’s name.
