Chapter 1 - TWO COFFINS, ONE WARRANT

“You really thought I wouldn’t find out?”

Lena stood beneath the cold white lights of the funeral home, her investigator’s badge raised above her shoulder.

Behind her rested two coffins.

The larger one held her sister, Maya.

The smaller white coffin held the baby Maya had carried for eight months but never lived long enough to bring home.

Two hundred mourners stared toward the front of the room.

Daniel was on his knees between the first row and the flower-covered platform. Two detectives forced his hands behind his back as he struggled against them.

“She fell!” he shouted. “Everyone knows that!”

A few feet away, Celeste stood frozen in a red dress.

Daniel had introduced her to the grieving family as a consultant from his company.

Lena knew what she really was.

His mistress.

And possibly something far worse.

Lena rested one hand on the white ribbon wrapped around the baby’s coffin. She did not cry.

She had already cried until there was nothing left inside her except purpose.

“Then explain the policy,” she said.

She opened a black evidence folder.

Inside were security photographs, restored messages, a life insurance contract, and a sealed bag containing a torn piece of red fabric stained with blood.

Daniel stopped fighting.

At the back of the room, two detectives blocked the doors.

One held a signed arrest warrant.

“We have the warrant,” he announced.

The elderly family attorney in the first row rose so quickly that his chair tipped backward.

Celeste looked toward the side exit.

It was already locked.

Lena lifted Maya’s phone.

A recovered voicemail waited on the screen.

Daniel stared at the words displayed above the audio file:

LIFE INSURANCE BENEFICIARY CHANGED.

His face turned white.

“She left me everything,” Lena said.

Daniel’s eyes rose toward her.

Not the money.

Not the house.

Maya had left Lena the truth.

And as her final recording began to play beside the two coffins, Daniel realized the woman he had tried to silence had planned for this moment.

👉 Maya’s voicemail began with a warning about her husband—but the most important name she whispered was not Daniel’s.
