Chapter 18 - THE SENTENCE
Daniel turned toward Lena from the defense table.
“I loved Maya,” he said.
Lena remained still.
“I made terrible decisions because I was afraid of losing everything.”
The judge interrupted.
“You lost nothing that belonged to you.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
He looked back at Lena.
“If she had trusted me, none of this would have happened.”
A sound moved through the courtroom.
Not surprise.
Disgust.
Even after the evidence, Daniel blamed Maya for refusing to surrender.
Lena rose to deliver her statement.
“My sister trusted you with her home, her company, her child, and her safety.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“You treated every act of love as something you were entitled to steal.”
Lena spoke about Maya’s kindness.
Her work with children.
Her excitement about becoming a mother.
She described the two coffins.
“The smallest coffin in that funeral home existed because you spent six minutes protecting money instead of calling for help.”
Their mother wept silently in the front row.
Lena continued.
“You did not only take Maya’s life. You took every birthday her child would have celebrated. Every first step. Every bedtime story.”
Daniel received a sentence that ensured he would spend decades in prison.
Celeste received a lengthy sentence for her role in the death and financial conspiracy.
The attorney lost his law license, surrendered his assets, and received prison time.
The stolen money was traced through shell companies.
Properties and luxury purchases were seized.
Most of the funds returned to Bennett Industrial Properties.
Lena became temporary trustee, exactly as Maya intended.
She did not keep the position permanently.
She appointed an independent management board and employee representatives.
Then she used the life insurance policy’s restored child-trust provision to create something in Maya’s name.
Not a monument.
Not another building carrying the family’s wealth.
