Chapter 16 - SHE LEFT ME EVERYTHING
“You really thought I wouldn’t find out?”
Daniel’s face changed when he saw Lena’s badge.
Celeste stepped backward.
The attorney gripped the edge of his chair.
Daniel tried to recover.
“This is my wife’s funeral.”
Lena looked toward Maya’s coffin.
“No. This is the last place you get to use her.”
She signaled the detectives.
Daniel was forced to his knees.
Celeste was detained near the side aisle.
The attorney rose, but two officers blocked him.
“She fell,” Daniel insisted. “Everyone knows that.”
Lena displayed the life insurance policy.
“Then explain why you forged her signature.”
She showed the security image of Daniel and Celeste at the top of the staircase.
“Explain the missing camera footage.”
She lifted the sealed red fabric.
“Explain why your mistress’s dress was in Maya’s hand.”
Guests began moving away from Celeste.
Their mother covered her mouth.
Lena turned toward the attorney.
“And explain why Maya’s family lawyer helped steal from her.”
A detective entered carrying the warrants.
“We have the warrant.”
Daniel was arrested for murder, conspiracy, fraud, and evidence tampering.
Celeste was charged as a co-conspirator.
The attorney was arrested for fraud, forgery, obstruction, and conspiracy.
Daniel looked toward the guests.
“This is Lena’s revenge. She wants the company.”
Lena raised Maya’s phone.
“She left me everything.”
The final voicemail began to play.
Maya’s voice filled the funeral home.
“If you’re hearing this, Daniel tried to make my death look like an accident.”
Their mother sobbed.
Then Maya spoke directly to her.
“Mom, please don’t blame Lena. She warned me. I was afraid admitting the truth would make it real.”
Lena closed her eyes.
Maya’s voice softened.
“And Lena, if I don’t get to tell you again—I love you. Protect Mom. Protect the company. And make sure my baby is remembered for something more than the night we died.”
No one in the room moved.
Daniel lowered his head.
