Chapter 5 - THE POLICY

The original life insurance policy had been created after Maya became pregnant.
If she died, the money would enter a trust for her child.
Daniel would receive enough to pay the mortgage and cover immediate expenses, but he would not control the full amount.
The revised document changed everything.
Daniel became the sole beneficiary.
The child’s trust disappeared.
The authorization was dated three days earlier.
Maya had supposedly signed it electronically from home.
She had been working at the clinic at the listed time.
The attorney quickly covered the document.
“I cannot discuss a client’s private records.”
“I am the insured person.”
“Maya, please calm down.”
She stared at him.
“Did you witness my signature?”
He did not answer.
That silence told her enough.
Maya stepped into the hallway and called Lena.
This time, Lena answered immediately.
“Where are you?”
“Outside the family attorney’s office.”
“What happened?”
Maya tried to explain.
The missing rent.
Celeste.
The hotel.
The insurance policy.
Her voice began to shake.
“I think Daniel knows I found it.”
“Do not go home alone.”
“My overnight bag is there.”
“Leave it.”
“My father’s original records—”
“Documents can be replaced. You can’t.”
Maya promised to drive to Lena’s apartment.
She never arrived.
At 8:42 that evening, Daniel called Lena.
His voice sounded broken.
“There’s been an accident.”
Maya had fallen down the main staircase of their lake house.
Daniel claimed he had been in the garage.
He said he heard a crash.
By the time emergency responders arrived, Maya was unconscious.
Doctors performed an emergency delivery.
The baby survived for eleven minutes.
Maya died before midnight.
At the hospital, Daniel repeated the same sentence to everyone.
“She slipped.”
Then Lena noticed a fresh scratch across his cheek.
“Where did that come from?” she asked.
Daniel touched it instinctively.
“I tried to catch her.”
Lena looked at his hands.
There was no blood on his cuffs.
No torn skin.
May you like
Nothing suggesting he had held his dying wife.
👉 Daniel’s story depended on Maya being alone at the top of the stairs, but a paramedic had seen a second wineglass in the bedroom.
