Chapter 10 - THE VOICEMAIL

Lena remembered Maya’s deleted message.
I found something in Dad’s company records.
She asked the phone company to preserve all available data.
Most content was encrypted, but Maya had left a voicemail in Lena’s mailbox at 8:11 on the night she died.
The system had marked it as corrupted because the call ended abruptly.
A forensic audio team restored it.
At first, there was only breathing.
Then Maya whispered:
“Lena, they’re both here.”
A man’s voice sounded in the background.
Daniel.
“Give me the ledger.”
Maya answered, louder now.
“No. You changed the insurance policy.”
Celeste said something too faint to understand.
Then Maya spoke again.
“I know where the money went.”
A chair scraped.
Daniel’s voice became sharper.
“You’re confused.”
“I copied everything.”
The audio filled with movement.
Maya whispered one final sentence:
“If something happens to me, ask about—”
The call cut off.
The missing name remained buried beneath distortion.
The audio proved there had been a confrontation.
It also proved Maya knew about the policy.
Daniel’s attorney argued that none of it established violence.
Daniel could claim Maya lost her balance while backing away.
Celeste could claim she panicked and left.
Lena listened to the recording dozens of times.
There was a faint metallic sound before the call ended.
Then a woman’s gasp.
The audio team isolated it.
It sounded like a bracelet striking the wooden railing.
Celeste’s bracelet.
Investigators reconstructed the position.
Maya had been holding the phone inside her cardigan pocket.
She stood near the top step.
Daniel was close enough for his voice to overwhelm the recording.
Celeste was beside the railing.
Someone said two words beneath the noise.
The team enhanced the section.
Celeste’s voice became clear.
“Take it.”
May you like
Then Maya screamed.
👉 The recording suggested Celeste ordered Daniel to take the ledger—but another recovered message showed they had discussed making Maya’s death look accidental.
