Chapter 11 - THE DELETED THREAD
Celeste had deleted her messages with Daniel.
She had also replaced her phone the morning after Maya died.
Investigators recovered cloud fragments from an old tablet registered to her account.
The conversation began months earlier.
At first, it was romantic.
Hotel plans.
Promises.
Complaints about Maya.
Then the messages turned financial.
Celeste warned that Maya was reviewing the rental accounts.
Daniel promised he would “handle her.”
Three weeks before the death, Celeste wrote:
If she exposes the shell companies, we both go down.
Daniel replied:
She’ll sign the competency papers before that happens.
Celeste:
And if she won’t?
Daniel:
She’s eight months pregnant. Everyone already thinks she’s emotional.
The most disturbing exchange occurred two days before the fall.
Celeste wrote:
The policy is done. The attorney confirmed it.
Daniel answered:
After Friday, none of this matters.
Celeste:
No mistakes.
Daniel:
It will look like the stairs.
The defense would later argue that “the stairs” referred to repairing a broken handrail.
But there was no repair order.
No contractor had been contacted.
The lake house stairs were not damaged until after Maya fell.
Investigators arrested Celeste for conspiracy, fraud, and evidence tampering.
She refused to speak.
Daniel remained free because prosecutors wanted a complete case before charging him with murder.
Lena hated the delay.
But she understood.
Daniel was watching.
If arrested too early, he could claim the investigation had been driven by a grieving sister.
The homicide team needed him to make a mistake.
So they allowed him to believe the funeral would proceed normally.
They allowed him to believe Celeste had been released after questioning.
They allowed him to believe the attorney had protected the insurance records.
Then Lena discovered Daniel planned to announce his leadership of Maya’s company during the reception after the burial.
He had already prepared a speech.
