The Maya Bennett Family Safety Center opened eighteen months later.
It offered legal guidance, emergency housing, financial-abuse counseling, and confidential support for pregnant women experiencing coercive control.
One room was dedicated to helping victims preserve digital evidence safely.
Another connected families with investigators trained to recognize financial crimes hidden inside relationships.
Lena refused to place her own name anywhere in the building.
“This belongs to Maya,” she said.
Their mother requested one addition.
A small garden behind the center.
At its center stood no statue.
Only a young magnolia tree surrounded by two engraved stones.
One bore Maya’s name.
The smaller stone carried the name Maya had chosen for her baby.

Maya had written it inside the nursery notebook.
Daniel never knew.

Maya’s doctor came.

“She would have had Maya’s eyes,” she whispered.
