Chapter 6 - THE FIRST LIE
Lena was removed from the official investigation because Maya was her sister.
She understood the rule.
She also understood what investigators missed when they accepted grief as proof of innocence.
The lake house had been cleaned before police finished photographing every room.
Daniel claimed a neighbor helped because blood remained on the hardwood floor.
The neighbor denied entering the house.
The second wineglass disappeared.
A broken picture frame near the staircase was thrown away.
Daniel said it had shattered during the fall.
The housekeeper later told Lena it had already been broken that morning.
The preliminary report described Maya’s death as an accidental fall.
Pregnancy had affected her balance.
The staircase was steep.
There were no cameras inside the house.
Everything fit—if no one looked closely.
Lena looked closely.
The medical examiner found bruising around Maya’s upper arms.
Daniel claimed those marks came from emergency treatment.
The paramedics said they did not.
Beneath Maya’s fingernails was a strand of dark synthetic fiber.
Her clothing contained a torn fragment of red fabric mixed with her blood.
Maya had worn a cream maternity dress.
Daniel wore gray.
Someone else had been close enough for Maya to tear their clothing while fighting.
Lena asked Daniel who had visited the house.
“No one.”
“Not Celeste?”
His eyes changed.
“Why would Celeste be there?”
“You tell me.”
“She’s an employee.”
“Is that all?”
Daniel’s grief hardened into anger.
“My wife and child are dead, and you’re interrogating me about a coworker?”
“I’m asking why her name appears in your hotel reservations.”
He stood.
“You need to leave.”
Their mother begged Lena to stop.
Not because she trusted Daniel.
Because she could not bear the idea that Maya’s death might be worse than an accident.
Lena left.
But before she reached her car, Daniel followed her outside.
“You’re hurting your mother,” he said.
Lena turned.
“No. Someone already did that.”
His voice dropped.
“Maya was unstable during the pregnancy.”
