Chapter 12 - WHAT MAYA SIGNED IN SECRET
Two weeks before her death, Maya visited a different attorney.
She did not use the family lawyer.
She chose a woman Daniel had never met.
Maya brought the black ledger, bank records, and photographs of her bruised wrist.
She changed her will.
She removed Daniel from every position of authority.
If Maya died, her ownership of Bennett Industrial Properties would transfer into a protected trust.
Lena would become temporary trustee.
Their mother would receive the family home.
Company employees would retain their jobs while an independent audit was completed.
Daniel would receive nothing beyond property clearly proven to belong to him.
Maya also created a sealed evidence directive.
If she became incapacitated or died unexpectedly, the attorney was authorized to release copies of the financial records to Lena and law enforcement.
“She was frightened,” the attorney told Lena.
“But she was clear. Organized. Completely competent.”
“Why didn’t she leave him that day?”
“She wanted one final document from the family attorney. Proof that Daniel personally ordered the insurance change.”
Maya believed she needed it to ensure Daniel could not escape by blaming Celeste.
The new attorney gave Lena a small metal box.
Inside was a flash drive labeled:
FOR MY SISTER.
There was also a handwritten letter.
Lena could not read it immediately.
Her hands shook too badly.
The flash drive contained company records, photographs, and a short video Maya recorded in her clinic office.
“If you’re watching this,” Maya said, “I didn’t get out in time.”
Lena covered her mouth.
Maya continued.
“Do not blame yourself. I kept thinking I could finish one more thing before asking for help.”
She explained the shell companies.
The affair.
The policy.
Then she said:
“Daniel is not the only one helping Celeste.”
Maya named the family attorney.
He had not merely witnessed the forged insurance signature.
