Chapter 2 - BEFORE THE HOUSE WENT SILENT
Six months earlier, Maya still laughed when she called Lena.
She was thirty-four, eight months pregnant, and obsessed with preparing the nursery.
She sent photographs of paint samples.
Cloud White.
Morning Mist.
Pale Moon.
“They all look white,” Lena told her.
“They are emotionally different whites.”
Lena laughed.
Maya laughed harder.
They had always been close.
After their father died, Lena became more protective, while Maya became the one who tried to keep everyone together.
Their mother called Maya the bridge.
Lena called her the person who believed everyone deserved one more chance.
That included Daniel.
When Maya met him at a charity dinner five years earlier, he seemed attentive and calm.
He remembered that she hated lilies but loved peonies.
He called their mother every Sunday.
He helped Maya manage the commercial properties she inherited from their father.
By the time they married, he appeared to fit naturally into the family.
Only Lena remained cautious.
She was a state police investigator. Years of interviews had taught her that charming people often revealed themselves in what they avoided.
Daniel never answered direct financial questions.
He always redirected them toward Maya.
“Your sister trusts me,” he would say.
As though trust were proof.
After Maya became pregnant, Daniel changed.
He began answering Maya’s phone.
He canceled family dinners because she was “too tired.”
He complained that Lena’s visits created stress.
When Lena asked Maya privately whether she felt safe, Maya became defensive.
“He’s under pressure.”
“From what?”
“The company. The baby. Everything.”
“What company problem?”
Maya hesitated.
Then she smiled too quickly.
“Nothing I need to worry about.”
Three weeks later, Maya stopped sending nursery pictures.
Her calls became shorter.
Daniel was always nearby.
Then, late one night, Lena received a message from her sister.
Don’t call me. He checks the phone bill.
A second message followed.
