Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN FROM ACCOUNTING

Celeste had joined Bennett Industrial Properties eighteen months earlier.
Her official title was financial strategy consultant.
Daniel claimed she had been hired to reorganize vendor contracts.
Maya met her only twice.
Celeste was polished, confident, and always wore something red.
During their first meeting, Celeste praised Daniel constantly.
“He saved this company,” she said.
Maya smiled.
“My father built it.”
“Of course. I only meant Daniel modernized it.”
The ledger told a different story.
Payments labeled maintenance consulting had been sent to three companies.
All three shared the same mailing address.
That address belonged to an apartment leased by Celeste.
More than $1.8 million had passed through the companies.
When Maya searched Daniel’s old laptop, she found a hotel confirmation for two guests.
Daniel Langford.
Celeste Vale.
The reservation was dated seven months earlier.
Maya stared at the screen until her vision blurred.
The financial betrayal was enormous.
The personal betrayal still hurt more.
She wanted to confront him immediately.
Instead, she heard Lena’s voice in her mind.
Evidence first. Emotion later.
Maya copied the files.
She forwarded them to an encrypted account.
Then she photographed Daniel’s calendar.
Several appointments were labeled D/C.
One was scheduled for the following week with the family attorney.
Another simply read:
POLICY REVISION.
Maya called their insurance provider.
The representative refused to discuss the policy without Daniel present because he had recently been added as an authorized account manager.
Maya had never authorized that.
She drove directly to the attorney’s office.
The elderly attorney looked uncomfortable when she entered.
“Daniel said you weren’t feeling well.”
“I’m pregnant, not incompetent.”
His eyes dropped toward her stomach.
Maya placed the copied ledger page on his desk.
“What did my husband ask you to change?”
The attorney removed his glasses.
“You should discuss this with Daniel.”
“I’m asking you.”
He said nothing.
On his desk, Maya saw a partially covered document bearing her name.
At the top were the words:
May you like
EIGHT-MILLION-DOLLAR TERM LIFE POLICY.
👉 Maya discovered the insurance policy before Daniel expected—but the signature authorizing the change had already been forged.
