Chapter 9 - The Safe Behind the Painting

Daniel refused to provide the code.

He sat handcuffed in the living room while officers searched the study.

Maya stood in front of the painting.

Emily watched Daniel’s face.

“Get a warrant for the safe,” Maya ordered.

Daniel laughed.

“You have nothing.”

Maya turned toward him.

“We have assault, unlawful restraint, witness intimidation, falsified medical documents, and a recorded conspiracy.”

“You have misunderstandings.”

Vanessa sat on the opposite sofa under police supervision.

Her confidence was gone.

She kept glancing at Daniel.

He no longer looked at her.

Maya approached Vanessa.

“You signed documents connected to Claire’s confinement.”

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“I didn’t know what they were.”

“You just said you signed what Daniel told you to sign.”

“I was scared.”

Daniel finally looked at her.

“Don’t say another word.”

Vanessa flinched.

Maya noticed.

“So he controls you too.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

Daniel said, “She’s lying.”

Emily crouched in front of Vanessa.

“My sister could have disappeared because of those papers.”

Vanessa whispered, “I thought he was only going to keep her in treatment until the trust changed.”

“That is not better.”

“I know.”

Maya asked, “Who was the doctor?”

Vanessa hesitated.

Daniel shouted, “Vanessa.”

She looked at him.

He no longer sounded protective.

He sounded threatening.

Something broke inside her.

“Dr. Stephen Cole,” she said.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Maya immediately contacted another unit.

Dr. Cole worked at the private clinic where Claire had been held.

A financial records check revealed large payments from a Whitmore consulting account.

Within an hour, a judge approved the expanded search warrant.

A locksmith opened the safe.

Inside were passports.

Cash.

Prescription pads bearing Dr. Cole’s name.

Signed medical forms.

A copy of Claire’s trust.

And a flash drive labeled with dates.

Maya inserted the drive into a secured laptop.

The first video opened.

It showed Claire in the living room.

Daniel stood over her.

The date was two years earlier.

The footage had been recorded by Daniel’s own security system.

He had saved it.

Dozens of videos followed.

Arguments.

Threats.

Violence.

Proof that Daniel had documented his own cruelty.

Emily stared at the screen in disbelief.

“Why would he keep these?”

Maya answered quietly.

May you like

“Because men like him don’t think evidence is dangerous when they believe they’ll never be caught.”

👉 The videos proved Claire had told the truth, but one final file revealed Daniel’s plan had already moved beyond guardianship.
