Chapter 12 - The First Wife Returns

Laura Bennett arrived two days later.
She was forty-three, calm, and visibly shaken when she saw Claire.
For several seconds, neither woman spoke.
Then Laura embraced her.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I should have warned someone.”
Claire answered, “You survived.”
Laura’s story mirrored Claire’s.
Daniel had been charming at first.
Then controlling.
Then violent.
When Laura tried to leave, he convinced a doctor that she was unstable.
Dr. Stephen Cole.
The same physician.
Cole prescribed heavy medication without proper evaluation.
Daniel used the side effects as proof that Laura could not manage her life.
Then he gained temporary control of her accounts.
Laura escaped only because a nurse helped her contact her brother.
Her family negotiated a private divorce.
Daniel returned some of the money in exchange for silence.
Laura had spent ten years believing no one would believe her.
Maya recorded every detail.
The pattern transformed the case.
This was no longer one abusive marriage.
It was a long-running scheme involving coercion, medical fraud, financial exploitation, and multiple victims.
Dr. Cole was arrested that afternoon.
Investigators found payments from Daniel dating back eleven years.
Cole initially denied everything.
Then officers showed him the videos and forged forms from the safe.
He requested an attorney.
Vanessa also asked for a deal.
She admitted helping Daniel draft the guardianship petition and lying to clinic staff.
In return for cooperation, prosecutors considered reduced charges.
Claire listened without speaking.
Emily asked, “Do you want Vanessa prosecuted fully?”
Claire thought carefully.
“She watched him hurt me.”
“Yes.”
“She helped him lie.”
“Yes.”
Claire looked through the interview-room glass where Vanessa sat alone.
“But she also gave you the doctor’s name.”
Maya said, “That does not erase what she did.”
“I know.”
Claire’s voice remained steady.
“I don’t want revenge. I want the truth placed where nobody can hide it.”
Maya nodded.
“That is what we’re building.”
Then the prosecutor entered with troubling news.
Daniel’s attorneys had requested release on bail.
They claimed the recordings were unlawfully obtained.
They also claimed Claire and Emily had staged the entire confrontation for financial gain.
