Chapter 11 - Claire Tells the Truth

At the police station, Claire gave her statement over four hours.
Maya remained in the room.
Emily sat beside her.
A victim advocate offered breaks whenever Claire needed them.
At first, Claire struggled to speak.
She had spent years measuring every word.
Daniel punished explanations.
He punished silence.
He punished anything he could call disobedience.
But once she began, the memories came in order.
The first shove.
The broken phone.
The locked bedroom.
The forged medical reports.
The threats involving her inheritance.
The night Daniel placed both hands around her throat.
The morning he apologized by buying a bracelet.
Claire explained how Daniel built a public story around her.
He told doctors she was unstable.
He told staff she was forgetful.
He told friends she did not like visitors.
He made isolation look like her preference.
Maya placed the saved videos beside Claire’s photographs.
Every detail matched.
Then Claire revealed something no one expected.
Daniel had used the same method on someone before.
“His first wife,” Claire said.
Maya looked up.
Daniel had always claimed his first marriage ended after his wife abandoned him.
Her name was Laura Bennett.
She had disappeared from his social circle ten years earlier.
Claire had once found an old letter inside a book in the library.
Laura had written:
If anything happens to me, look at the medical records.
Daniel caught Claire reading it and burned the letter.
But Claire remembered the name.
Maya searched the database.
Laura Bennett had been hospitalized for a mental health crisis during her marriage.
Daniel had obtained temporary control of her finances.
Six months later, they divorced.
Laura moved away and never publicly spoke about him.
Maya contacted the last known address.
No response.
Then she found a professional license in Maine.
Laura now worked as a school counselor.
Maya called.
At first, Laura refused to speak.
Then Maya said Claire’s name.
Silence followed.
Finally, Laura whispered, “Did he lock her in the blue bedroom?”
Claire closed her eyes.
The mansion had one blue bedroom.
The room Daniel used when he wanted to hide her from staff.
Laura knew.

Because she had been held there too.
👉 The woman Daniel erased from his past was alive, and her testimony could prove Claire was not his first victim.
