Chapter 15 - The Courtroom
The courtroom was packed on the first day of the hearing.
Daniel entered wearing a dark suit.
No handcuffs were visible.
He looked polished and calm.
Claire felt her body tense.
For years, that appearance had fooled everyone.
Now she knew exactly what lived behind it.
Emily sat behind the prosecution table.
Laura and Rosa sat nearby.
Maya remained close.
Daniel’s attorney began by attacking the mansion operation.
He described Emily as a trained security specialist who had manipulated Daniel.
He argued Daniel reacted to an intruder impersonating his wife.
Then the attorney questioned Claire’s mental health.
He displayed records from Dr. Cole’s clinic.
Claire’s hands began to shake.
Daniel noticed.
He smiled slightly.
The prosecutor stood.
“Those records were created by a doctor currently charged with falsification and conspiracy.”
The judge allowed the questioning but warned the defense against presenting disputed documents as fact.
When Claire took the stand, the courtroom blurred around her.
The prosecutor asked simple questions first.
Her name.
Her marriage date.
Her home.
Then came the harder ones.
“Did Daniel Whitmore ever strike you?”
“Yes.”
“Did he ever prevent you from leaving?”
“Yes.”
“Did he arrange for you to be admitted to a clinic under false pretenses?”
“Yes.”
Daniel’s attorney rose.
“Mrs. Whitmore, you have experienced anxiety, correct?”
Claire looked at him.
“I experienced fear.”
“Are those different?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Anxiety tells you something bad might happen.”
Claire turned toward Daniel.
“Fear is what you feel when you know exactly who will make it happen.”
The courtroom became still.
The attorney questioned inconsistencies in dates.
Claire admitted she did not remember every day.
He suggested memory gaps made her unreliable.
Claire answered, “I remembered enough to survive.”
Then the prosecutor played the mansion recording.
Daniel’s voice filled the courtroom.
Nothing in this house is yours.
Then Vanessa’s confession.
You said the doctor would keep her there until the money transferred.
Daniel’s calm expression finally cracked.
The judge watched him carefully.
But the most damaging evidence had not yet been presented.
