Chapter 2 - Three Days Earlier

Three days before the police entered Daniel’s mansion, Claire Whitmore sat in the back room of a women’s shelter with an ice pack against her ribs.

She wore a borrowed sweatshirt.

Her wedding ring was gone.

Her hands would not stop shaking.

Across from her sat Detective Maya Collins.

Beside Maya was a woman who looked almost exactly like Claire.

Emily Harper had the same dark hair, the same blue eyes, and the same shape of face.

But Emily carried herself differently.

Her shoulders were square.

Her eyes were alert.

She had spent twelve years working in corporate security and training women in self-defense.

Claire had spent six years learning how to disappear inside her own marriage.

“I can’t go back,” Claire whispered.

“You won’t,” Emily said.

Daniel had controlled nearly every part of Claire’s life.

He monitored her phone.

He chose her clothes.

He discouraged friendships.

He told their neighbors she suffered from anxiety.

When bruises appeared, he called them accidents.

When Claire cried in public, he said she was emotionally unstable.

He had spent years building a version of her that nobody would trust.

Maya placed several photographs on the table.

A split lip.

Finger-shaped bruises.

A damaged bedroom door.

A broken phone.

“These help,” Maya said. “But Daniel’s attorneys will say the injuries were accidental. They’ll say the photographs were staged.”

Claire lowered her eyes.

“That’s what he always says.”

Emily leaned forward.

“Then we make him say what he does when he thinks nobody is watching.”

Claire looked up.

Maya explained the plan.

Daniel believed Claire had returned to the mansion after hiding at a hotel.

He did not know Emily had arrived from Chicago.

He had only met her once, briefly, years earlier.

With makeup, identical hair, and the same clothes, Emily could pass for Claire long enough to provoke Daniel into revealing himself.

Claire’s breathing quickened.

“What if he hurts her?”

Emily took her sister’s hand.

“He won’t get the chance.”

Maya added, “We’ll be outside. The moment he raises a hand, we move.”

Claire looked at her twin.

“You don’t know what he’s like when he loses control.”

Emily squeezed her fingers.

“That’s exactly why I’m going.”

Then Claire remembered something.

A detail she had hidden even from Maya.

“There’s a safe behind the painting in his study,” she whispered. “Daniel told me never to touch it.”

Emily watched her carefully.

“What’s inside?”

Claire’s eyes filled with fear.

“I don’t know. But the night I found the key, he nearly killed me.”

👉 The safe Daniel guarded more fiercely than his reputation would soon become the center of the case.
