Chapter 8 - The Mask Falls

Daniel crossed the room and ripped the lampshade away.
The hidden camera dropped onto the table.
Its red light continued blinking.
Vanessa gasped.
Daniel picked it up.
Then he turned toward Emily.
Every trace of charm disappeared.
“You recorded me.”
Emily no longer pretended to be afraid.
“Yes.”
Daniel smashed the camera against the marble floor.
Vanessa rushed toward the door.
He blocked her.
“Nobody leaves.”
Outside, Maya watched the lamp feed go dark.
The body camera still transmitted.
“Team ready,” she said.
Inside, Daniel grabbed Emily’s wrist.
She broke his grip instantly.
His eyes widened.
Claire had never resisted like that.
He swung his other hand.
Emily blocked it.
Daniel stumbled.
Vanessa stared.
“Who are you?”
Emily stepped between Daniel and the door.
“You already know.”
Daniel studied her face again.
Then understanding struck him.
“Emily.”
She removed the wedding ring.
“My sister is safe.”
Daniel’s shock quickly became rage.
“You think you can walk into my house and destroy me?”
“You did that yourself.”
Vanessa moved toward the side hallway.
Daniel shouted, “Stay where you are!”
She stopped.
Emily reached toward her collar and revealed the body camera.
Daniel looked from the camera to the phone under the sofa cushion.
The livestream remained active.
“Smile,” Emily said. “It’s all recording.”
Outside, Maya saw Daniel raise his hand again.
The warrant conditions were met.
She grabbed her radio.
“Move in now.”
Daniel heard a faint sound beyond the front door.
Boots.
He stepped backward.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Then he lunged toward the phone.
Emily moved to stop him.
He seized a heavy glass sculpture from the table.
Vanessa screamed.
The front door burst open.
Officers flooded the living room.
“Drop it!”
Daniel froze with the sculpture raised above his shoulder.
Emily stood directly in front of him.
He looked at the weapons aimed his way.
Slowly, he lowered the sculpture.
Detective Maya entered.
Daniel tried to recover his confidence.
“This woman broke into my house.”
Maya held up the warrant.
“No, Mr. Whitmore. She helped us document a felony.”
Officers handcuffed him.
Vanessa began crying.
Then Maya looked toward the study.
“Secure the safe.”
Daniel’s head snapped up.

That reaction told Maya everything.
