Chapter 17 - Vanessa’s Choice
Vanessa entered the courtroom under a cooperation agreement.
She wore a plain gray suit.
The red-and-black boxing outfit from the mansion seemed like part of another life.
She admitted the affair.
She admitted mocking Claire.
She admitted signing documents without reading them carefully.
Then the prosecutor asked the hardest question.
“Did you witness Daniel assault Claire?”
Vanessa stared at the floor.
“Yes.”
“How many times?”
“I don’t know.”
“More than once?”
“Yes.”
“More than five times?”
Vanessa began crying.
“Yes.”
Claire remained still.
She had imagined this moment many times.
She expected anger.
Instead, she felt exhausted.
Vanessa explained that Daniel first portrayed Claire as unstable and dangerous.
He told Vanessa he was trapped in the marriage.
Then Vanessa witnessed the truth.
She stayed anyway.
“Why?” the prosecutor asked.
“Because he promised me the house, the company shares, and a life with him after Claire was committed.”
The prosecutor displayed messages.
Daniel had promised Vanessa a percentage of Claire’s trust.
She had not been merely deceived.
She had participated for personal gain.
Vanessa admitted she helped pressure Dr. Cole.
She also admitted placing medication in Claire’s tea before the clinic admission.
Claire’s breath caught.
That explained the confusion.
The weakness.
The missing hours.
Emily reached for her hand.
Vanessa looked toward Claire.
“I’m sorry.”
Claire did not answer.
The apology mattered less than the truth.
The prosecutor asked, “Why did you finally cooperate?”
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“Because the night the police came, he was ready to blame everything on me.”
Daniel’s attorney objected.
The judge overruled.
Vanessa continued.
“I realized Claire was not the only woman he thought was disposable.”
Her testimony completed the conspiracy case.
But reduced charges did not mean no consequences.
Vanessa still faced fraud, unlawful confinement, and evidence tampering charges.
Her deal required prison time, restitution, and full cooperation.
After court, Vanessa approached Claire in the hallway.
“I know you don’t owe me forgiveness.”
Claire looked at her.
“You’re right.”
Vanessa lowered her head.
