Chapter 6 - The First Confession

Daniel circled Emily slowly.
“You embarrassed me,” he said. “Do you understand what you did?”
Emily remained silent.
“You ran away from your husband. You made staff ask questions. You forced me to explain your condition.”
“My condition?”
Daniel glanced at Vanessa.
“Your episodes.”
Vanessa smiled.
Emily looked at the camera hidden in the lamp.
Only for half a second.
Daniel did not notice.
“I don’t have episodes,” she said.
His jaw tightened.
“Yes, you do.”
“You told the clinic I tried to hurt myself.”
“You were hysterical.”
“You locked me in the bedroom.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“I protected you from yourself.”
Outside, Maya recorded every word.
Emily asked, “Is that what you call it when you put your hands around my throat?”
Vanessa’s smile vanished.
Daniel stared at Emily.
He had not expected the question.
Then he laughed.
“You bruise easily.”
Emily felt anger burn through her chest.
Not for herself.
For Claire.
“How many times did you tell people I fell?”
“As many times as necessary.”
The confession came so casually that even Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
Emily continued.
“And the guardianship papers?”
Daniel’s expression sharpened.
“You went into my study.”
“You’re trying to take control of my trust.”
“I’m trying to protect what you would waste.”
“It’s mine.”
Daniel leaned close enough that she could smell whiskey.
“Nothing in this house is yours.”
Behind him, Vanessa whispered, “Daniel, maybe stop talking.”
He turned on her.
“Stay out of it.”
Vanessa raised both hands.
Emily noticed the first fracture between them.
Daniel was losing control.
She pushed again.
“What happens when the court refuses?”
Daniel smiled.
“The court won’t refuse. The doctor already signed.”
Emily’s pulse quickened.
Maya spoke into her headset outside.
“Get the doctor’s name.”
Emily asked, “Which doctor?”
Daniel hesitated.
Too late.
He had already revealed enough to prove coordination.
Then Vanessa suddenly stood.
“Daniel, she’s acting different.”
He looked back at Emily.
For the first time, suspicion entered his eyes.
“You’re right,” he said.
He reached for her face.
Not to strike.
To inspect her.
Emily stepped away.
Daniel narrowed his eyes.

“Claire never looks at me like that.”
👉 One wrong expression had made Daniel question the woman before him, and Emily had only seconds to keep the trap alive.
