Chapter 10 - The File Marked “Transfer”
At the bottom of the flash drive was a folder labeled TRANSFER.
Inside were scanned documents dated for the following morning.
A private medical transport request.
A long-term residential facility agreement.
A forged signature from Claire.
A payment schedule.
And a letter authorizing Daniel to act as sole financial decision-maker once Claire was admitted.
The facility was in another state.
Remote.
Private.
Known for accepting wealthy patients under family arrangements.
Maya read the address twice.
“He was going to move her tomorrow.”
Emily felt sick.
Daniel had not merely planned to control Claire’s money.
He planned to remove her from everyone who might help.
Claire would have been transported before the guardianship hearing.
By the time anyone understood, she would have been hundreds of miles away under heavy medication.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“He told me she was going to a wellness center.”
Emily turned toward her.
“And you believed him?”
Vanessa cried harder.
“I believed what I wanted.”
Daniel sat silently.
Maya placed the printed transport form in front of him.
“You forged your wife’s signature.”
He shrugged.
“She needed help.”
“You paid a doctor to certify a condition she didn’t have.”
“No one can prove that.”
Maya held up the prescription pads.
“We can.”
Daniel looked toward Emily.
“You think Claire will survive a trial? She can barely speak without shaking.”
Emily stepped closer.
“She won’t be alone.”
Daniel smiled cruelly.
“She always was.”
Then a new voice came from the doorway.
“No.”
Claire stood there beside a victim advocate and two officers.
She was pale.
Still bruised.
Still afraid.
But she was standing.
Daniel’s expression changed for the first time since his arrest.
Not anger.
Not confidence.
Shock.
Claire looked at the broken camera, the open safe, and the handcuffs around his wrists.
Then she looked directly into his eyes.
“I was isolated,” she said. “I was never alone.”
Daniel tried to stand.
An officer forced him back down.
Claire flinched.
Emily immediately moved beside her.
Daniel noticed.
He had spent years making Claire believe no one would come.
