Chapter 4 - The Papers on the Desk

Emily found Claire in a private clinic outside the city.

Daniel had admitted her under another doctor’s name after telling staff she was emotionally unstable.

Claire was not restrained.

But she had no phone, no wallet, and no access to transportation.

Daniel had signed the forms as her husband.

When Emily entered the room, Claire broke down.

“He told them I tried to hurt myself,” she whispered. “I didn’t.”

Emily photographed every document.

Maya arrived with a victim advocate and demanded Claire’s release.

The clinic administrator hesitated until Maya pointed out that no legal psychiatric hold had been approved.

Daniel had relied on wealth, confusion, and his wife’s fear.

Not law.

Once Claire was safe, Emily returned to the mansion while Daniel attended a charity dinner.

She used Claire’s key.

Inside Daniel’s study, she found a stack of documents on the desk.

A petition requesting temporary financial control over Claire’s assets.

A statement claiming she was mentally incompetent.

A draft medical affidavit.

And a trust amendment that would place Claire’s inheritance entirely under Daniel’s management.

Claire’s parents had died when she was twenty-three.

They had left her several million dollars in a protected trust.

Daniel had always claimed he did not care about the money.

But the documents told another story.

He was not merely trying to silence her.

He was preparing to declare her incapable of managing her own life.

Then he would control everything.

Emily photographed the papers.

Behind the desk hung a large abstract painting.

Claire had mentioned the safe behind it.

Emily removed the frame.

A steel door appeared.

It required a six-digit code and a physical key.

She tried Claire’s birthday.

Wrong.

Their wedding date.

Wrong.

Daniel’s company founding date.

Wrong.

Then headlights swept across the study window.

Daniel had returned early.

Emily replaced the painting and slipped out through the side hallway.

She barely made it outside before his car stopped.

From the garden, she watched Daniel enter the mansion.

Vanessa followed him.

They were laughing.

Emily raised her phone and recorded them through the window.

Daniel kissed Vanessa.

Then Vanessa handed him a red folder.

Daniel opened it and smiled.

Even from outside, Emily could read the title printed across the front.
