Chapter 5 - The Twin Takes Her Place

The plan was dangerous because it depended on Daniel believing Claire had come home.
Maya arranged surveillance outside the mansion.
A judge approved limited recording based on the voicemail, the clinic documents, and Claire’s photographs.
But they still needed direct evidence of Daniel’s violence and threats.
Emily studied everything about her sister.
The way Claire walked.
The way she held her shoulders.
The way she lowered her eyes around Daniel.
Claire hated every second of it.
“You shouldn’t have to become me,” she said.
Emily answered softly, “I’m not becoming you. I’m showing him that you were never alone.”
They used makeup to reproduce Claire’s bruises.
Emily wore Claire’s pale pink pajamas.
She put on the wedding ring.
A small body camera was hidden beneath the collar.
A second camera went inside a lamp Claire knew Daniel never touched.
A secure phone transmitted the livestream directly to Maya’s surveillance vehicle.
Claire remained at the shelter with an advocate and two officers.
Before Emily left, Claire grabbed her hand.
“He will test you.”
“I know.”
“He might apologize first.”
Emily nodded.
“He might cry.”
“I know.”
“He might make you feel guilty.”
Emily looked into her sister’s eyes.
“He doesn’t know me.”
At 8:42 p.m., Emily entered the mansion.
Daniel stood at the bar.
Vanessa sat on the sofa in training clothes, drinking wine.
Daniel looked surprised.
Then relieved.
“You came back.”
Emily lowered her head.
“I didn’t know where else to go.”
Daniel smiled.
The performance began immediately.
He softened his voice.
He poured a drink.
He said he had been worried.
He said the clinic had misunderstood him.
He said Vanessa was only there because Claire’s instability frightened him.
Vanessa smirked.
Emily remained quiet.
Daniel moved closer.
Then he saw a small suitcase near the door.
His smile disappeared.
“You were planning to leave again?”
Emily let her hands tremble.
“I just need space.”
Daniel set down his glass.
Vanessa leaned back, suddenly interested.
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“You don’t get to decide that.”
Outside, Maya leaned toward the live feed.

Inside, Emily watched Daniel’s hand curl into a fist.
👉 The softer Daniel’s voice became, the closer he moved toward proving every accusation against him.
