Chapter 7 - Vanessa Begins to Panic

Daniel moved closer.
“Look at me.”
Emily lowered her eyes.
It was exactly what Claire had trained herself to do.
Daniel studied her face.
The makeup.
The bruises.
The familiar scar.
He touched her hair.
Emily forced herself not to react.
Vanessa paced behind the sofa.
“This is stupid,” she said. “We should leave.”
Daniel ignored her.
“Where were you for three days?”
Emily answered with Claire’s rehearsed lie.
“At a motel.”
“Which one?”
“I don’t remember.”
Daniel smiled slightly.
“Claire remembers everything when she’s afraid.”
Vanessa stopped walking.
Emily realized Vanessa knew more about the abuse than Claire had ever suspected.
“You watched him hurt me,” Emily said.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I watched you provoke him.”
The answer was clear.
She had been present before.
Daniel relaxed, pleased by her support.
Emily turned toward Vanessa.
“How many times?”
Vanessa looked away.
Daniel snapped, “Don’t answer her.”
Emily continued.
“Were you there when he broke the bedroom door?”
Vanessa’s lips parted.
“Were you there when he took my phone?”
“Stop,” Daniel said.
“Were you there when he sent me to that clinic?”
Vanessa shouted, “I only signed what he told me to sign!”
Silence filled the room.
Daniel slowly turned toward her.
Emily’s heart pounded.
Outside, Maya marked the timestamp.
“What did you sign?” Emily asked.
Vanessa realized her mistake.
“Nothing.”
Daniel walked toward her.
“You need to leave.”
Vanessa backed away.
“No. You said this would be finished tonight.”
Emily caught the phrase.
“Finished how?”
Daniel’s eyes flashed.
Vanessa looked from him to Emily.
“He said once the guardianship was approved, you’d be placed somewhere private.”
Daniel grabbed Vanessa’s arm.
“Enough.”
She pulled free.
“You told me the doctor would keep her there until the money transferred.”
Emily’s stomach turned.
This was more than manipulation.
It was conspiracy.
Daniel had planned to imprison Claire under false medical authority until he gained control of her trust.
Outside, Maya radioed for the arrest team to move closer.
But she did not send them in yet.
They still needed the doctor’s identity and evidence from the safe.
Then Daniel looked directly at the hidden lamp.
His eyes settled on the tiny red light.

“What is that?”
👉 Vanessa had exposed the plan, but Daniel had finally noticed the camera recording every word.
