Chapter 16 - Two Wives, One Pattern
Laura walked to the witness stand without looking at Daniel.
She described their marriage.
The isolation.
The violence.
The medical fraud.
The blue bedroom.
The financial control.
Daniel’s attorney suggested she held resentment over the divorce.
Laura answered calmly.
“I held silence. There is a difference.”
Then Rosa testified.
She identified both women in her photographs.
She authenticated the recordings.
She explained Daniel’s orders and threats.
The defense attacked her for waiting so long.
Rosa replied, “I was afraid because he had power. Today he has less.”
Finally, Detective Maya presented the financial timeline.
Payments to Dr. Cole.
Transfers from Laura’s accounts.
Preparations to seize Claire’s trust.
The transport booking.
The forged signature.
The facility contract.
The prosecutor displayed the video files Daniel kept in his safe.
The defense objected.
The judge allowed them.
One recording showed Daniel trapping Claire in the living room.
Another showed him blocking a doorway.
A third captured his voice after Claire fell.
“Look what you made me do.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Emily moved closer behind her.
Then the final video began.
It had been recorded only one month earlier.
Daniel stood in his study with Vanessa and Dr. Cole.
He said:
“Once Claire is declared incompetent, the trust transfers under my authority. After that, she can stay at the facility as long as necessary.”
Vanessa asked, “What if she tells someone?”
Daniel laughed.
“Who would believe her?”
The same sentence he used the night of the trap.
The sentence that once represented his power now proved his intent.
Daniel’s attorney requested a recess.
The judge denied it.
The prosecutor rested.
Daniel leaned toward his attorney, speaking angrily.
For the first time, the jury saw the expression Claire knew so well.
The mask was slipping.
Then Daniel made another mistake.
As officers approached to escort him out, he looked directly at Claire and whispered:
“You’ll pay for this.”
