Claire still had not told Rachel that her father served in the same courthouse.
She feared involving him would look like influence.
Instead, Rachel contacted Marcus Hale, Daniel’s former accountant.
Marcus had resigned six months earlier after refusing to approve irregular payments.
At first, he refused to help.
“Daniel ruins people,” he said.
“He’s using my signature,” Claire replied.
Marcus went silent.
Then he asked to see the documents.
When Claire showed him the transfers to Vanessa’s company, his face tightened.
“I warned him this structure was illegal.”
“Can you prove it?”
“I kept copies of emails.”
Marcus agreed to testify if investigators granted him protection from retaliation.
For the first time, Claire saw a path forward.
But Daniel noticed her growing calm.
He began watching her more closely.
One night, he stood in the nursery doorway while Claire folded baby clothes.
“You seem less upset,” he said.
“I’m tired.”
“Rachel Stone is filling your head with nonsense.”
“She’s my lawyer.”
“She’s turning a simple divorce into war.”
Claire looked at him.
“You forged my signature.”
Daniel’s expression did not change.
“Be careful what you accuse me of.”
“Is that a threat?”
He stepped closer.
“It’s advice from the man who still controls whether you leave this marriage comfortably—or with nothing.”
Claire’s recorder captured every word.
Daniel bent down until his face was inches from hers.
“At court, you will sign.”
Then he looked at her stomach.
