Chapter 8 - The Settlement TrapDaniel’s proposed settlement arrived three days later.
It was forty-seven pages long.
The first pages offered Claire enough money to appear generous.
The remaining pages quietly transferred everything else.
She would surrender all ownership in Daniel’s companies.
She would accept responsibility for several disputed transactions.
She would waive future claims.
Most dangerously, she would agree that emotional instability had affected her judgment.
Rachel read the final section and looked up sharply.
“This language could be used in a custody case.”
Claire’s hand rested protectively on her belly.
“He wants my baby.”
“He wants leverage,” Rachel said. “The baby is leverage.”
Claire’s fear hardened into resolve.
Together, they created a plan.
Claire would not confront Daniel about the recordings.
She would allow him to believe she might sign.
Rachel would request a courthouse settlement conference.
Meanwhile, copies of the financial records would be sent to state investigators.
Claire also wrote a letter to her father.
She had not spoken honestly to him in years.
She explained the marriage, the fraud, the isolation, and the threats.
But she did not send it.
Shame stopped her.
She feared Thomas would ask why she had stayed silent so long.
Daniel mistook her silence for surrender.
He began bringing Vanessa openly into the house.
Vanessa wore Claire’s robe.
She sat in Claire’s chair.
One afternoon, she entered the nursery and ran her fingers along the crib.
“This room will need repainting,” Vanessa said.
Claire’s voice turned cold.
“You will never touch my child.”
Vanessa leaned close.
