Claire agreed because she believed they were partners.
She reviewed contracts, organized accounts, and corrected errors in Daniel’s records.
Whenever she found irregular transfers, Daniel had an explanation.
Temporary loans.
Tax planning.
Investor confidentiality.
Then he began moving money through companies Claire did not recognize.
When she asked questions, he laughed.
“You’re my wife, not my auditor.”
Daniel also discouraged contact with her father.
Whenever Thomas called, Daniel created an argument afterward.
“He abandoned you after your mother died.”
“He cares more about his courtroom than his own daughter.”
“He only contacts you when he wants control.”
Claire already carried years of hurt toward her father.
Daniel used that wound carefully.
By their fourth anniversary, she spoke to Thomas only twice a year.
Daniel controlled the household accounts, their vehicles, and even the password to their home security system.
Still, Claire kept one private savings account.
And she never lost the instincts that had made her a skilled compliance analyst.
When unexplained millions began moving through Daniel’s companies, she quietly copied every record.
