Chapter 1 - The Kick Outside CourtVanessa’s red heel drove into Claire’s seven-month pregnant belly before anyone could stop her.

Claire’s breath vanished.
Her knees struck the cold marble outside Courtroom 4B, and one hand slapped the floor while the other wrapped around her stomach.
Daniel stood three feet away.
He did not reach for his wife.
He did not call for help.
He only looked down at her and gave a tired, mocking smile.
“She always overreacts,” he said.
Claire tried to breathe, but a sharp pain spread beneath her ribs.
“I’m pregnant,” she whispered.
Vanessa stepped back, smoothing her red dress as though she had merely bumped into someone.
“She lunged at me,” Vanessa said. “I protected myself.”
Two courthouse officers turned at once.
One rushed between Vanessa and Claire while the other called for medical assistance.
“Step away. Now.”
Daniel leaned toward Claire.
“Stop making a scene,” he hissed. “Sign the settlement, and this ends.”
Then he saw the security camera above them.
A red light blinked steadily.
It had recorded everything.
Before Daniel could speak, the courtroom door swung open.
An older judge in black robes stepped into the hallway.
He stopped when he saw Claire curled around her belly.
His face changed from confusion to horror.
Then to fury.
“Who dared lay a hand on my daughter?”
