Chapter 14 - The Silent HeartbeatThe medic placed a portable monitor against Claire’s abdomen.

At first, only static filled the hallway.
Claire gripped Rachel’s hand.
“Why can’t I hear the baby?”
“We’re adjusting the position,” the medic said.
Thomas stood nearby, his face drained of color.
Daniel tried to approach.
An officer blocked him.
“That’s my child,” Daniel said.
Claire turned her head toward him.
“You didn’t care when she kicked me.”
“I didn’t know she would do that.”
Vanessa shouted from behind the second officer.
“She provoked me!”
Thomas looked at her with a coldness that silenced the hallway.
“You will have the opportunity to explain that under oath.”
The medic moved the device again.
Still nothing.
Claire began to sob.
“Please.”
Then a rapid heartbeat filled the speaker.
Strong.
Fast.
Alive.
Claire closed her eyes as relief broke through her pain.
The medic warned that the baby could still be in danger.
She needed immediate hospital care.
As officers handcuffed Vanessa, Daniel protested.
“This is a misunderstanding.”
The lead officer faced him.
“We have video, witnesses, and an injured pregnant woman.”
Daniel pointed at Claire.
“She’s manipulating all of you.”
Thomas rose.
“No. She survived you.”
Daniel finally recognized him fully.
Judge Thomas Whitmore.
A man whose rulings Daniel had once complained about at dinner without realizing he was insulting Claire’s father.
But Thomas did not use his position to threaten him.
He simply said, “The law will decide what happens to you.”
